An industry-wide shift toward sustainable living is impacting not just the way people are living in their homes, but also their buying habits before they become homeowners. In the National Association of REALTORS’ 2023 Sustainability Report, which surveyed REALTOR members across the U.S, 48% of respondents noted that their clients expressed varying levels of interest in sustainability.
Roughly 32% of respondents reported using green data fields in their Multiple Listing Service (MLS) to provide prospective buyers with information on eco-friendly features and energy information in property listings, a feature that has become increasingly popular amid rising demand for more sustainable homes.
Solar energy emerges as a key player, with 74% of respondents acknowledging the availability of properties with solar panels in their markets. Moreover, 34% of REALTORS reported that solar panels positively impacted the perceived property value.
Clients consistently listed windows, doors, siding, proximity to frequently visited places, and comfortable living spaces as crucial considerations in a sustainable home. This emphasis on eco-consciousness and comfort underscores the importance of green construction practices and energy-efficient designs that do not compromise the quality of living.
