An accent wall is a great way to create interest in a bland open-plan interior, and it’s an excellent way to divide a space without interior walls. But what is the best material to design one?

Naturally, the easiest and cheapest way to do an accent wall is with paint. “One wall painted with a rich, dark color creates visual depth in a room, making it feel larger," interior designer and stylist Mariella Cruzado has said.

Benjamin Moore agrees. “Bold, colorful shades are good accent wall paint colors because they accentuate a space without overpowering it,” the company says on its website.

In addition to paint, designers use different elements to create color flow. “By using the same color in fabrics, finishes, accessories, and furnishings in adjoining rooms, you can create a seamless transition from space to space,” Benjamin Moore adds.

But paint is not the only option. Architects and remodelers use a number of other materials, including ceramic tile, textured gypsum, decorative panels, wood, and even leftover traditional flooring.

Here are 10 cool options that can help transform your next project.
