Realtor.com found the most affordable suburbs within reach of the country’s 11 largest metropolitan areas.

In recent years, many aspiring homeowners have been pushed further and further into the suburbs while home prices in the country’s most desirable metros continue to rise. While moving far outside of urban areas has its downsides, it may be worth it to score more affordable living quarters.

"As more people look to the suburbs for affordability, homes are harder to find there, too," says Danielle Hale, chief economist of realtor.com. "Buyers not willing to go farther out may have to make other trade-offs such as accepting a smaller home or buying a home in need of renovation."

Realtor.com flagged Hillside, N.J., as the most affordable place to live outside of New York, La Puente, Calif., as a destination outside of Los Angeles, and Hammond, Ind. as the place to look for homes outside of Chicago.
