Colorado was ranked as the best state in the nation by U.S. News & World Report's annual best states ranking, followed by Utah and Washington. California and Florida rounded out the top five.

Washington state scored highest in the growth category, which analyzes the GDP growth rate, average net migration between 2013 and 2016, and growth of the young population in that same period. Yet, The Evergreen State ranked 24th in the employment category. California was deemed the state with the best business environment, per Business Insider. Measures in this category include the number of top company headquarters per million residents in 2016, and the rate of new business formation between 2015 and 2017.

U.S. News & World Report just released its annual best states ranking, and they looked partly at economic factors. Each state was ranked on three economic indicators: growth, employment, and business. Combining growth (50 percent), employment (30 percent), and business (20 percent), U.S. News & World Report put together their list of the best economies in the US. Colorado took the cake, followed by Utah and Washington.
