New York City, Washington, D.C., and the Bay Area are all popular destinations for job searchers, according to a study by Glassdoor.

The study found that about one quarter of application submitted through the popular career website were for positions outside of the candidate’s home metro area, according to CBS’ MoneyWatch.

Candidates were most likely to seek jobs in the country’s largest metros, and move away from smaller urban areas like Providence, R.I., and Columbus, Ohio. California is seeing significant movement both away and towards Bay Area metros, due to the combination of tech job availability and high costs of living.

"What we find is that the big move-out cities are often smaller metros that are close by another metro that is booming with many job openings," says Andrew Chamberlain, Glassdoor’s chief economist.
