The number of violent crimes in the U.S. dropped by 4.4 percent in 2013 compared to the previous year, according to estimates released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The top five safest states were Vermont, Maine, Virginia, Wyoming, and Kentucky. Rounding out the top 10 were New Hampshire, Idaho, Utah, Minnesota, and Montana. Not only were nonviolent crimes less common in these states, but so too were other crimes such as theft and other property crimes.
