The U.S. is a predominantly suburban nation, as 85 percent of the people who live in the largest metro areas reside in the suburbs or exurbs. That’s particularly true for a few major cities down south.

According to New Geography, Charlotte is the nation’s most suburban metro, with an exurban population of 51 percent and an urban population density of 1,700.

Along with Charlotte, nine other cities have virtually no urban core, meaning that the suburban population is 100 percent. Other cities on the list include Raleigh, N.C., Orlando, Fla., Jacksonville, Fla., and Phoenix.

On the other end, New York City, Boston, and Buffalo were found to be the least suburban metros.
