One reason why housing is so expensive in San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington D.C., is because its residents make enough money to live there.

Through a LinkedIn report, CNBC ranked the 10 highest-paying cities, based on median total compensation. San Francisco finished first, with a median salary of $112,400, the only city on the list in six figures.

Seattle ($95,600), Washington D.C. ($87,300), New York City ($86,600), and Boston ($86,000) round out the top five.
