Welcome to the Bizarro World, where up is down, hello means goodbye, and everything is smaller in Texas.
That’s right, at least one Texas builder is forgoing the popular notion that everything in Texas needs to be big, and he is doing it by building tiny homes. Tiny homes are nothing new as it is a spreading trend across the United States. But Rudy Rivas, a Dallas area builder, has decided to quit building 4,500-sf homes and is instead focusing on homes measuring in at around 180-sf.
The homes, which Rivas describes as being “whimsical” and “Harry Potter-looking,” may be growing in popularity, but they are still outliers in the housing market. According to Dallasnews.com, the average new home started in the U.S. in 2015 was 2,721-sf, a record size and up 20 percent from 2014. In fact, only 3 percent of homes built in 2015 were smaller than 1,200-sf.
But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a market for these tiny homes, especially with more people looking to live simply and without excess.
