The top three, Dallas-Fort Worth, Atlanta, and Houston, also have relatively affordable housing markets to boot. The median home prices range between $228,800 in Atlanta and $268,200 in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Realtor.com chief economist Danielle Hale says that these three metros have two significant things in common: local governments that allow more development, and having more space to grow without mountains or oceans tying up usable land. The median household income for the top three metros ranges between $61,708 in Dallas-Fort Worth, and $63,812 in Houston. Atlanta has the lowest monthly housing payment, $950, NerdWallet reports.

Each quarter, NerdWallet calculates home affordability for 172 metro areas. NerdWallet narrowed its focus this quarter to the 10 metros that had the most population growth from mid-2016 to mid-2017, the latest data available from the U.S. Census Bureau. Among these 10, Atlanta had the most affordable home prices this spring and Seattle had the least affordable.
