A new report from the North Carolina Building Performance Association (NCBPA) concludes that high-performance homes have a greater financial value than other homes.

In 2016, 34,152 high-performance homes and buildings were being built or retrofitted in North Carolina. Since 2007, 198,525 high-performance structures have been identified in the state. The NCBPA report also found that the price premium paid was 9.5 percent for these homes sold in three metro markets between 2015 and 2016, Proud Green Home reports. Sam Galphin, owner of home energy rating business Performance Point, says that homebuyers understand that high-performance homes, "improve the health, safety, cash flow and comfort of their occupants."

"We anticipated this analysis would illustrate that, on average, builders and homeowners receive a net positive financial return on the sometimes added up-front costs of energy efficient, green or high-performance features in the homes they build or sell," said Ryan Miller, NCBPA's Executive Director and lead author of the report. "The results indicate a $29,365 average sale price premium in addition to the improved health, safety, comfort, durability and lower utility bills that these homes offer."
