Nationally, 59 percent of homes for sale are within reach of the middle class, compared with 62 percent last October, says Trulia’s Chief Economist Jed Kolko.

When looked at by region, markets in the Midwest offer the most homes for sale that are affordable for the country’s middle class. The top five most affordable markets are in Ohio, Indiana, and upstate New York. When it comes to the least affordable, the usual suspects of California metros share the top five spots with New York City, with less than 30 percent of for-sale homes in these markets affordable for the middle class.
