The amount of homes with 5,000 square feet or more of living space continues to rise.

With data from the Census Bureau’s Survey of Construction, NAHB Eye On Housing reports that 28,000 homes with 5,000-plus square feet were started in 2015, accounting for 3.9 percent of the total number of starts.

For comparison, in 2009 only 11,000 homes (2.5 percent of all homes) of that size were started. In 2006, 45,000 homes with 5,000 square feet or more were started, but that only accounted for 3.0 percent of all homes.

When analyzed by the different characteristics, 79% of 5,000+ square feet home started have a finished basement, 68% have a 3 or more car garage, and at least 60% have a patio or porch. More than 50% of the homes have 5 bedrooms or more and 70% have 4 bathrooms or more.
