A national poll conducted by the National Association of Home Builders found that the majority of homeowners who have lived in their homes at least 10 years have not moved because they are comfortable.

The three least important reasons to stay cited by long-term resident respondents are that their home is underwater (3 percent), moving to a new job in a more expensive area (4 percent), and not wanting to give up a current low mortgage interest rate, (5 percent), according to the NAHB poll. Over 20 percent of homeowners don't want to go through the expense and experience of homebuying and moving, and 10 percent say there are no homes on the market that they would want to buy, or could afford.

NAHB regularly conducts national polls of American adults and homebuyers in order to understand new trends and preferences in the housing market ... Currently, one of the most pressing issues in the housing market is the lack of inventory available for-sale. Part of the problem stems from the fact that existing homeowners are staying in their homes longer than they used to, and therefore keeping their homes off-the-market.
