Vermont tops the list of the safest states in the U.S., according to new analysis from WalletHub.

The personal finance website ranked states based on personal and residential safety, road safety, workplace safety, and emergency preparedness. Each category took into account several factors, including the number of crimes, presence of law enforcement, unemployment rates, and climate disasters.

With the top composite score, Vermont also ranked second in the personal and residential safety category and third in financial safety. Maine, Minnesota, Utah, and New Hampshire rounded out the top five, while Mississippi ranked 50th on the list.
