Developer The Core Companies won over Santa Clara’s city council in acquiring and developing six acres of city-owned land after what the Silicon Valley Business Journal calls “a fierce competition.”

What made the company’s development stand out was its “agrihood” concept, which would maintain a vestige of the region’s agricultural past. Core has joined forces with community and agricultural groups to develop a 1.5-acre urban agricultural open space in the middle of the proposed, mixed-income community.

Residents of the community will have access to grow their own fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers.

The city council vote favored Core’s proposal even though officials said in a report that the concept “would be less financially viable than its competitors,” The Business Journal reports.
