New data on global renter population growth show that the U.S. had the fourth-largest gain between 2010 and 2015, and the tenth largest renter population in the world.

RentCafé's data show that the U.S. renter population increased 9.3 percent over the five years studied, and grew twice as fast as those in the European Union. Of the 30 countries analyzed, Switzerland had the largest renter population, 56.6 percent, making it a renter-majority population. Yet, the country only had 1.8 percent growth in that time. HousingWire noted that the more developed countries typically had higher rental populations.

The U.S. was outpaced by Denmark, which saw its renter population grow 11.6 percent, Ireland with 12.3 percent growth and the United Kingdom with 21.6 percent growth ... Some nations saw a decrease in their renter population. Russia, for example, watched its share of renting households drop 28 percent from 2010 to 2015. Singapore also saw a significant decline in its renter population, which decreased by 13.4 percent.
