Rooftop solar panels seem like a great way to save money while also protecting the environment.
While that is true, it can also become a massive headache if the installation is set to take place in a state that has not perfected their net metering (which compensates homegrown energy producers for the surplus of electricity they send back to the grid) and interconnection (the technical term for the logistics involved in hooking up a renewable energy project to the grid) policies.
CityLab reports that in the most recent study by the Renewable Energy Council, 10 states received A’s for interconnection, a vast improvement over the zero in 2007. However, 16 states still received F’s.
