Realtor.com released its picks for the top 10 hot housing markets to watch in 2020, and the list forgoes larger, classic cities for spunky underdogs such as Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Boise, Idaho. Americans are finally seeing the value in these locations that boast vibrant downtowns, booming economic opportunities, and affordable living all for a low housing price tag. It turns out, people are deciding it's just not worth it to work themselves to death to afford homes in the nation's biggest cities. That's so 2017! Instead, they're heading to places where their paychecks will go further and they can enjoy a more laid-back pace of life. In the realtor.com forecast of top markets to watch in 2020, the top 10 are mostly medium-size metros in the South and inland West.
"The cities that we expect to do best in 2020 are not necessarily big, fancy, coastal cities, but secondary markets where the job market is still pretty good but housing is affordable," says Danielle Hale, chief economist of realtor.com.
