Illinois buyers prefer contemporary home styles, while buyers in Massachusetts choose transitional. People in Michigan, home of the auto industry, have a fondness for industrial, while folks in Mississippi eye shabby chic.

Realtor.com found the most common interior design style for each state, based on the most-searched terms via Google Trends over the last 12 months.

The most common design choice was Victorian. It was the number one search term for 10 states, including Indiana, Nevada, and Pennsylvania. In second was Bohemian, with nine states, including Alaska, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Contemporary was the top search in Texas and six other states.

South Carolina was the only state where coastal was the most searched style, which could indicate that people in general are cooling to the trend. "It is surprising to me that coastal was only popular in one state," says Bonnie J. Steves, an interior designer in New York City. "I thought it would have been big in Maine, Rhode Island, Florida, and Massachusetts around Cape Cod."
