Washington, D.C. Has the Largest Share of Million-Dollar Homes in the U.S.

In Washington, D.C., California, and Hawaii, at least 13 percent of the homes in each state are worth at least $1 million, based on recent Census data.

Washington, D.C. had the largest share, 17.3 percent, of the cities analyzed. The metro also has the highest cost of living, including child care, which costs an average of $31,158. D.C. was ranked third in a list of median household income by metro area, at $95,843. MarketWatch reports that home prices in the suburbs are typically above the national average.

On the flip side, Arkansas and Mississippi don’t have a single metro area with a median household income over $59,000. Perhaps not surprisingly, the most rural states also tend to have the smallest percentage of million-dollar homes.
