10 US Cities Where Finding a House Under $200K Is Still Possible

Less than a quarter of nationwide home sales are for homes under $200K, but some cities still have a sizable share of affordable housing

As home prices increase, it’s become more difficult to find a home for less than $200,000. In fact, the number of homes that cost under $200,000 has gone from around half of all sales to less than a quarter of sales as of 2023.

However, in some markets, finding affordable housing is still possible. In a recent report, real estate listings website Realtor.com found the top 10 housing markets with the highest share of homes under $200,000. Two Fort Lauderdale, Fla., suburbs—Lauderhill and Lauderdale Lakes—held the top spots on the list due to the development of more condos in the area.

These towns are extra attractive because they're in a popular retirement destination but more affordable than other nearby Florida cities. Both are about 15-minute drives to the center of Fort Lauderdale, which means easy access to urban perks without compromising on a suburban lifestyle.

“Areas that were once popular for downsizing are now out of reach for many,” says Hannah Jones, a Realtor.com senior economic analyst. “Florida markets like Lauderdale Lakes are seeing a surge in affordable condos, providing viable options for those looking to downsize without breaking the bank."
