Designing a kitchen for a multigenerational household requires careful planning to meet the needs of children, parents, and grandparents. As costs increase and more families opt to live under one roof, kitchens are being used more intensively. Because of this, builders and designers need to think creatively about how specific design choices can affect family dynamics. Remodeling and design platform Houzz suggests several things to consider when designing a kitchen for the whole family, including the positioning of appliances for easy use, functional cabinetry for added storage, durable flooring, and more.

The position of certain elements in your kitchen will help household members feel connected.

“Locate the cooktop on an island or peninsula so the cook connects to what’s happening in the rest of the space, whether that’s chatting to someone sitting at the table or keeping an eye on the kids playing in the garden,” says Alan Drumm of Uncommon Projects. “But make sure small children can’t reach pans from the other side of the island.”
