Make sure small kitchens get plenty of light, Realty Times says. This means eliminating superfluous walls, creating pass-throughs, and removing all barriers.

“Certain elements—like backless barstools, wire kitchen islands, or glass pendant lights, for example—leave sight lines open and don't trip up your eye as you move around the room," Apartment Therapy suggests.

Builders should also consider going easy on cabinetry – too many cabinets, especially if they are dark in color, create the illusion that the room is much smaller than it actually is.
