Two separate studies from both Brookings and The Urban Land Institute confirms a revival in peripheral communities.

“It’s time to put an end to the urban legend of the impending death of America’s suburbs,” argues Forbes contributor Joel Kotkin, who covers demographic, social, and economic trends.

Making up roughly 43 percent of all U.S. residences in 2010, peripheral, recent suburbs are also seeing more than 80 percent of employment growth from 2007 to 2013.

He looks at data from the two studies and challenges planners to not dismiss exurban areas as “a necessary part of our evolving metropolitan areas.”
