With billions of people worldwide lacking access to safe and clean water, the International Code Council (ICC) is leading efforts to combat the global water crisis through its inaugural World Water Awareness campaign. This initiative, launched in alignment with World Water Day, seeks to mobilize individuals and communities to take practical steps toward water conservation and sustainability.

Running throughout March, the campaign highlights the pressing need for consistent water conservation efforts and emphasizes the shared responsibility of individuals, governments, and organizations in ensuring reliable access to safely managed drinking water and adequate sanitation services for all.

At the core of the World Water Awareness campaign is a multifaceted approach aimed at engaging both ICC members and the general public. A dedicated webpage serves as a central hub for resources, research, and information, providing participants with tools to make a meaningful impact. Educational events, both in-person and virtual, offer platforms for discussion on water conservation-related topics and the role of codes and standards as policy tools in preserving this essential resource.

One of the campaign's flagship events, the "Standards Save: A Water Conservation Summit," is set to take place on Thursday, March 21, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Esber Andiroglu from the University of Miami will present findings from a critical study emphasizing the urgent need for the adoption of modern water conservation standards. Information on this and other World Water Awareness events can be accessed online.

“Water is an essential human need, and the global water crisis is only predicted to worsen in the near future,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO. “Our World Water Campaign will not only bring awareness to this issue, but also provide resources on how people can get involved and help. This campaign shows how people can make a difference at both the individual and governmental levels.”

As part of its advocacy efforts, the ICC urges experts, organizations, government officials, and business leaders to collaborate in implementing sustainable solutions. Individuals are encouraged to sign a letter to policymakers, emphasizing the importance of water conservation resources and immediate action.

Ultimately, the ICC's World Water Awareness campaign stands as a proactive response to the global water crisis. By promoting awareness, providing resources, and fostering collaboration, the initiative hopes to empower individuals and communities to take meaningful action toward a more sustainable and water-secure future.
