Housing Vacancies Remain Stable During Q3 2024

Homeowner and rental vacancy rates have only risen slightly year-over-year

For both owned and rented homes, vacancy rates remained relatively stable in Q3 2024, with only slight year-over-year changes. According to the Calculated Risk blog, national rental vacancy rates stood at 6.9%, compared with 6.6% last year. Meanwhile, the homeowner vacancy rate rose slightly to 1%, up from 0.8% in Q3 2023, but unchanged from the Q2 2024.

The homeownership rate of 65.6 percent was not statistically different from the rate in the third quarter 2023 (66.0 percent) and virtually the same as the rate in the second quarter 2024 (65.6 percent).
