Construction Job Growth Waivers at the End of the Year
The construction industry added 8,000 jobs in December, bringing the total number of jobs to 196,000 year-over-year. Still, many states reported job losses

Throughout 2024, the construction industry added 196,000 jobs, but on a month-over-month basis, the number of available construction jobs declined. According to the National Association of Home Builders’ Eye On Housing blog, 8,000 construction jobs were added in December 2024. This was a drop from November, when the total number of added construction jobs rose to 211,000 year-over-year. Still, a majority of the U.S. saw job growth in December, with 26 states reporting an increase, while 20 states reported a loss in construction jobs. The remaining states saw little to no movement.
Texas added 31,500 construction jobs in 2024, which was the largest gain of any state, while California lost 12,400 construction sector jobs. In percentage terms, Alaska had the highest annual growth rate in the construction sector at 18.9%. Over this period, West Virginia reported the largest decline of 3.4%.Read more
