Hurricane Irma May Crush South Florida’s New Residential Construction
More than 500,000 single-family homes and 100,000 rental units have been built in the Miami area since 2000

Miami and the rest of South Florida have been a haven for builders and developers over the last two decades. An incoming hurricane, though, may jeopardize all the progress they have made.
CNBC reports that Hurricane Irma, a Category 5 storm expected to hit Florida this weekend, threatens to seriously damage the state’s new construction projects. Since 2000, South Florida has added more than half a million single-family homes and 100,000 units in rental towers.
Hurricane Irma is expected to be even stronger than Hurricane Andrew, which decimated the region in 1992.
The hope is that builders and developers have incorporated new flood and wind resistant design technologies to better withstand a devastating hurricane.
