With housing affordability declining over the past few years, families of several generations are more likely to live under one roof. One developer in New England has taken advantage of this trend, creating a community specifically designed for multigenerational households. According to real estate marketing platform Realtor.com, the 15-unit community by Etchstone Properties features designs for two-family homes. Fully independent, each of the homes within the duplex design has a separate garage and its own entrance with private walls and utilities.
Although the multigenerational housing segment remains a small part of the housing market, the idea has grown in the past few years. In fact a recent survey shows 83% of respondents would consider buying and living with another family member in order to afford a home.
While just 0.23% of homes listed for sale suggested “multigenerational housing” in 2024, the share has increased significantly in recent years. In 2020–22, less than 0.1% of listings mentioned “multigenerational.” This share increased in both 2023 and 2024. Read more
