In honor of Valentine's Day, the National Association of Realtors has compiled homebuyer and seller data to analyze current household composition trends, and how those impact home shopping decision-making.

Most recent homebuyer households were married couples, 63 percent, and among first-time buyers, this household type had the largest share as well, 54 percent. Sixty-seven percent of marrieds were repeat buyers. Eight percent of recent buyers were single women, nine percent were single males, and eight percent were unmarried couples. Five percent of recent homebuyers identified as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. In terms of product, 82 percent of buyers purchased a single-family detached home, eight percent bought a townhouse or row house, and four percent bought an apartment or condo.

Fifteen percent of all buyers were influenced to choose their neighborhood based on the convenience to a vet or outdoor space for their pet. 20 percent of unmarried couples chose their neighborhood based on the convenience to a vet or outdoor space for their pet.
