Homeowners are expanding their kitchens and testing out more vibrant finishes and smart technology at the close of 2022, while wellness design reigns supreme in new home remodels, according to the National Kitchen & Bath Association’s annual report. As younger homeowners revamp their living spaces, more personalized kitchens are on the rise, while neutral colors like white and beige are becoming less popular.

Throughout the pandemic, a number of homeowners also opened up their kitchens and created more functional spaces with added storage to accommodate more time spent at home, and that trend continues to grow. Tighter environmental regulations are also causing a growing number of Americans to rethink the products they put in their homes, leading to a rise in 100% LED lighting, energy-efficient appliances, VOC-free paints, and other sustainable features.

The style themes being combined include modern farmhouse, organic modern, simple transition, classic contemporary and nature inspired. “Combining multiple design elements and materials along with bold accents, splashes of color and texture” bring about these colorfully eclectic and highly personalized kitchens, the study notes. Neutrals go white (67%), earthy and woodsy, and colors ease into nature-inspired coastal blues (37% choice) and greens (the top choice of 45% of respondents). Accents go bold with colorful artwork (45%), wallpaper (40%) and backsplashes (55%). Hints of metallic show up to “add glamour” or, conversely, a “rustic feel,” the study shares.
