Nonfarm Payroll Employment Is on the Rise Post-Pandemic

Total employment increased in over half of the country in May as the economy makes a strong post-pandemic recovery

Nonfarm payroll employment increased on a monthly basis in 32 states and the District of Columbia in May, while the number of jobs recovered since the pandemic-induced recession climbed to 6.5 million year-over-year, NAHB Eye on Housing reports. Texas added the most jobs on a month-over-month basis with a gain of 74,200 in May, while California reported 42,900 jobs added and New York saw an increase of 26,800.

Of the 48 states which reported construction sector jobs data in May, 22 states reported increases from April, while the total number of construction sector jobs in the U.S. increased by 283,000 year-over-year.

Year-over-year ending in May, 6.5 million jobs have been recovered, marking the economic rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic induced recession. All the states and District of Columbia added jobs compared to a year ago. The range of job gains spanned 869,300 jobs in California to 5,400 jobs added in Wyoming. In percentage terms, Nevada reported the highest increase by 7.1%, while Kansas increased by 1.3% compared to a year ago.
