Despite a Desire to Join the Construction Industry, Gen Z Faces Roadblocks
While many young people want to pursue a career in the skilled trades, the path to get there isn't always easy. According to Construction Dive, which cites survey data from tool manufacturer DeWalt, more than two-thirds of high school students in skilled trades programs are dedicated to pursuing careers in their fields. However, many face obstacles accessing essential training, with half reporting being waitlisted. Among the 225 students surveyed, 55% engaged in internships, 47% in mentorships, and 46% in hands-on work experiences. The remaining students faced various challenges involving the cost of trade school, limited networking opportunities, and inadequate access to tools and equipment.
Meeting future Gen Z workers where they’re at may be critical for talent attraction and retention, researchers found. About a third of students said they’d leave the skilled trades if the industry doesn’t meet their expectations, citing critical needs such as work-life balance and a clear path to advancement.
