In response to one of California’s worst droughts in history, home builder Granville Homes is making synthetic turf standard in his homes, and grass optional for its backyards.

The turf is six times more expensive than real grass, and according to Granville president Darius Assemi, “looks substantially more attractive than grass.”

Other builders are taking different approaches to deal with the ongoing drought. Fresno builder Wathen Castanos has gotten rid of grass entirely. Instead, it is planting five-gallon, drought-tolerant plants, Fresno Bee reports.
