A Hampton Summer Bungalow Renovated With a Modern Aesthetic
New York-based interior designer Robert McKinley has collaborated with top building products brands for a curated residence in Montauk that blends the relaxed coastal styles of Europe and the U.S.
Originally built in 1971, the McKinley Bungalow Federal is a 2,400-square foot raised ranch-style house that maintains select original details while receiving a modern update. McKinley says he designed the home with the same sense of approachable luxury and a clean, modern aesthetic, which was “inspired by Montauk’s coastline, paired with the casual elegance of Europe’s seaside towns.”
The Federal Bungalow is one of two “shoppable stay” properties that the designer has renovated and made available. Each is outfitted with products and brands that embody the Studio Robert McKinley aesthetic and lifestyle and are also readily available for purchase.
McKinley has said he realized that today’s travelers are looking for hospitality choices that are more designed-oriented and give them the feel of home. As a result, he launched the new venture—the McKinley Bungalows.
For the baths, the designer chose products from Duravit USA. "I’ve been a fan of Duravit’s classic modernity for many years and am so honored to have them as a partner,” says the principal of Studio Robert McKinley. “Their quality is recognizable at first glance. They perfectly marry design and function - you couldn’t ask for a better product."
The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is centrally located in a residential neighborhood. It sleeps eight people and has an attached pool house that can sleep an additional two people.
For the bathrooms, McKinley chose Duravit’s most classic collections from top design partners, such as Happy D.2 toilets, washbasins Vero and round Starck 2, and D-Code. Faucets are from California Faucets, including a Culinary Faucet that makes a dramatic appearance in the kitchen.
The kitchen features Reform, which makes drawer fronts and doors for Ikea cabinet boxes; a Smeg wall oven; and a PITT cooking system that integrates the burners directly into the countertop.
