California employs “water cops” to control sprinkling during drought

In the third consecutive year of a devastating drought, the Huffington Post reports that many California municipalities are hiring “water cops” to enforce state water conservation rules.

Many of these enforcers patrol neighborhoods to see if there are any houses using sprinklers. Residents that haven’t been cited before get a warning. A second violation means they will have to attend a meeting about saving water. A third offense will result in a $500 fine.
