What's become of the recession's “zombie developments”?

Many developments that were starting to spring up during the housing boom stalled during the recession, resulting in dormant wastelands littering the country today.

Citylab shares some stories of what consultants, developers, and municipalities are doing about these unfinished communities, and the many challenges that come with the effort of trying to revamp or transform them. Several cities opt for rezoning the empty land for use as something else, while others plan to create new, walkable communities that are different from the car-dependent subdivisions originally planned and popular in the early 2000s.
