Study looks at where Americans are happiest and why

A study led by Penn State professor Stephan Goetz found that people in suburban counties tend to be happiest, Fast Co. Exist reports.

The study was done by counting the number of days people said they were in a negative mood. Suburban communities are found to be happiest because they often have the best of two worlds: proximity to jobs and activities downtown, and enough privacy without isolation. However, longer commute times tend to make people less happy, the research found.
