Marriage No Longer First Stepping Stone to a Mortgage

In the past, couples were always married before they purchased a home together, but today, the tides are changing as unmarried couples, same-sex partners, and roommates choose to enter the housing market, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Home buyers today are more likely to be older, unmarried, and possibly have a child - but being married is no longer a requirement for them.

The number of married Americans in 2003 was 53.4 percent, in 2013 it was 47.9 percent. The percentage of homeownership has also gone from 68.9 percent in 2005 to 65.1 percent in 2013. There isn’t actually a decline in the number of two-adult households, it’s just that couples are choosing to wait longer before they get married, and they aren’t letting marriage be a roadblock to buying a home.
