Are Immigrants Key to Housing Market Recovery?

At a time when it seems to some that the American Dream may be long gone, many foreign-born residents continue seeing homeownership as a pathway to achieving that goal.

In the last 20 years, immigrants have accounted for 27.5 percent of all household growth, Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies found. The numbers are especially surprising at a time when the American Dream appears to be becoming a memory. Although the exact rate of immigrant homeowners varies among different groups, the rate of ownership is projected to reach 55.7 percent by 2020, which could help fuel the market’s continued recovery.
