CityLab looks at the planners at Culver City, Calif., that are using tree canopies as a major economic and environmental asset.
According to several bodies of research cited by CityLab, trees in urban areas “slow down traffic, foster civic pride and identity, and improve property values.”
But, like all living organisms, trees have a natural lifecycle, and planners have to plan ahead to find replacement trees and keep chunks of tree canopies from disappearing.
