Creating Homeownership through Public Housing

With 40 million American households renting their homes, CityLab reports that policy and housing experts are designing a program to encourage renters to save.

One example is the Family Self-Sufficiency Program (FSS), which began in 1990 out of the Department of Housing and Urban Development.

A study done on the model in 2011 found that residents in the program experienced a jump in their annual income from $19,902 to $33,390 in five years. When residents completed the program, they would leave with an average $5,300 in savings.
