The Washington Post uses data from NPR’s Planet Money and the 2013 American Community Survey to find out how much income makes a person “middle class.”
Using annual salaries alone, to be middle class in Detroit means a household earns $30,000 annually. Meanwhile, a family in San Jose, Calif., with a middle income makes $103,000. These two cities are at the extreme ends of the list of 30 metro areas nationwide.
The median income nationally is $64,000.
