Instead of home ec or shop class, students at Calgary’s Jack James High School can build a real home, the Calgary Herald reports.
The school partners with local home builder Homes by Avi, and students build the main floor of a home onsite at the school. At the end of the year, Homes by Avi takes the house, moves it to a new community, builds the top floor and sells it. Proceeds go to the school program.
Similarly, McKee Homes in Airdrie, Alberta, works with local 10th graders, teaching them how to build a home over the course of a year. The program is a bit different, though: students take core classes like math and chemistry onsite in one of the home’s retrofitted garages.
