Perhaps Home Improvement was onto something when they invented the ‘Man’s Kitchen’ all the way back in 1994. Having an at-home butcher in the fridge or a food selection of only beans, potatoes, and meat was probably a little extreme, but the sentiment still rings true; men are spending more time in the kitchen.
According to a study conducted in 2012 by the University of Michigan of Americans born between 1961 and 1981, married and single men cook an average of about eight meals a week. This newfound love of cooking for men has begun to influence what the more desirable design choices for a kitchen are, Realtor.com reports.
Flat-front cabinetry, counters with mitered edges, high-contrast palettes, and large, simple pulls are all in. Kitchens have become “more tailored, more masculine, more streamlined,” according to Young Huh, a New York designer and member of a new trend-forecasting panel for the National Kitchen & Bath Association.
Another design aesthetic some kitchens are beginning to mimic, high-performance sports cars, are yet another signal that men are beginning to migrate from the garage to the kitchen.
