Across the country, the median household income is $53,657 and the average annual income needed to be a part of the top 1 percent is $1,303,198. As with all medians and averages for the United States, when looked at on a state-by-state basis, the numbers vary widely from the overall totals.
For example, the median household income in Maryland is $71,836, the highest in the nation. In Mississippi, however, the median household income is only $36,641. Meanwhile, the state with the highest average annual income of the top 1 percent is, surprisingly, Wyoming, with a whopping $5,078,696. There are only two other states with totals above two million in this category (Connecticut and New York). West Virginia, on the other hand, has the lowest average annual income of the top 1 percent at just $537,989.
Other states in the category of the highest median household income include New Hampshire ($67,819), Virginia ($65,246), and Washington ($62,187). Other states with the lowest median household incomes include Ohio ($44,375), New Mexico ($43,424), and Arkansas ($39,018).
