It is hard enough to find an apartment with ample interior living space in New York City. Finding a place with private outdoor space is an even harder task to accomplish, and if you are fortunate enough to have some outdoor space, the last thing you want to do is waste it.

As The New York Times reports, residents across Manhattan are doing their best to turn concrete terraces, rooftop decks, and backyards into vibrant, green areas perfect for relaxing.

The first step in transforming apartment or townhouse outdoor space is to learn any building rules that may be applicable to the area. From there, it is all about optimizing the space by configuring plants, furniture, and anything else (such as grills or basketball hoops) in the most efficient layout possible.

For example, strategically placed tall green evergreens are perfect for adding privacy to terraces without sacrificing views and urban gardens can add a bit of form and function to a townhouse rooftop.
