In a new retrospective listicle, reporter Jenny Xie showcases 30 kitchens from past Curbed House Calls and Renovation Diary columns to inspire new kitchen design projects.
Ranging from a concrete accented contemporary home in Los Angeles to a minimalist yet commodious Manhattan apartment, Curbed has design features to inspire homeowners and home designers running the gamut of styles. In Arizona, Millennial homeowner Miles McDermott wanted to emphasize his mid-century modern taste with authentic pieces from the era. Raised in Mesa, Ariz. made an impact, says McDermott, "Every single house seemed to be made with the same adobe brick, with terra cotta tile, granite countertops, and beveled oak cabinets." While working at a local thrift store, McDermott's love for midcentury was at first sight, "One rainy morning, a big midcentury hutch came in off the truck. It was in perfect condition, and a beautiful piece. My manager told me the style was ‘midcentury,’ and, after work, I pulled out my laptop to find out what the hell I’d been missing."
For many households, the kitchen is where all the action is. It’s the heart of the home where everyone comes together to eat, talk, work, relax, and just be in the presence of each other. It’s no surprise then that of the numerous charming homes we’ve toured across the country, so many have delightful, distinct kitchens that seem to have been designed exactly as the homeowners wanted.
