Eight of the top ten boomtowns in the U.S. economy are in Florida, including Cape Coral, Saint Petersburg, and Tampa.

Cape Coral, Florida took the number one spot in SmartAsset's ranking due to an influx of new residents, equal to 2.9 percent of its population. The city can also boast a growing economy, with 5.2 percent GDP growth from 2012 to 2016. Franklin, Tennessee was the highest-ranking city not in Florida with an unemployment rate of 2.1 percent. In the employment metrics, Franklin scored better than 95 percent of the other cities in the study.

In order to find the top 10 boomtowns of 2017, we looked at data for 581 cities across five metrics. We looked at unemployment rate, unemployment rate change, housing unit change, population change and GDP growth.
